What is the Mocking Spongebob meme?
Mocking SpongeBob shows SpongeBob SquarePants bent forward with his one arm tucked behind his back, his eyes pointing in different directions and his jaw hanging, making a goofy, chicken-like face. The pose reads as a sarcastic mimic, someone repeating your words back in a dumb voice. Online, the caption repeats a statement in alternating upper and lowercase letters ("sTuDy HaRd"), which became the written shorthand for a mocking tone. The joke is pure ridicule: you quote what someone said, then echo it in clown case to show how little you think of it.
Origin: The frame is from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Little Yellow Book" (2012). The alternating-caps mocking format took off on Twitter in 2017 and is sometimes called Spongemock.
Also known as: Spongemock, SpongeBob Chicken, Alternating Caps SpongeBob.
How to use the Mocking Spongebob meme
The top box holds the original statement as said by someone else, usually prefixed with who said it ("teacher:", "my boss:"). The bottom box repeats it in alternating caps, attributed to "me:".
The mocking only works if the quote is something annoying, hypocritical or patronizing, like a lecture you didn't ask for, an obvious excuse or a smug piece of advice. Keep the quote short, because alternating case is hard to read in long sentences.
