What is the Fake Spirit Halloween Costume meme?
Fake Spirit Halloween Costume mimics the cheap plastic costume bags sold at Spirit Halloween, the seasonal store chain: an orange packet with the grim-reaper Spirit logo, a big white panel where the product photo would be, and "Adult Size Costume, One Size Fits Most" in the corner. People drop a picture of an oddly specific person, moment or character into the white space and write a deadpan product title and an "Includes:" list. The joke is that anything, no matter how obscure or mundane, looks like it could be a real costume once it is sold in this packaging with a list of sad accessories.
Origin: Spirit Halloween is a US chain of pop-up Halloween stores whose costume bags have a recognizable orange design. Edited packages with invented, oddly niche costumes became a recurring joke every autumn.
Also known as: Spirit Halloween Meme, Fake Spirit Halloween Costumes, Spirit Halloween Costume Template.
How to use the Fake Spirit Halloween Costume meme
The template has five text boxes on the orange side. The first, larger box is the costume name: make it painfully specific, like "Guy Who Says 'Let's Circle Back'". The next four are the contents list; the second box usually reads "Includes:" and the last three are the items, each starting with a dash.
The items are where the jokes stack up: one real prop, one intangible thing ("- unearned confidence") and one letdown ("- nothing"). Paste or imagine a photo of the character in the white panel. Niche references to a specific job, fandom or family member land harder than famous characters, because the absurdity is that a store would sell it.
