What is the Pepperidge Farm Remembers meme?
Pepperidge Farm Remembers is a Family Guy frame shown inside a rounded TV-screen border: an old man in a straw boater hat, spectacles and waistcoat, holding the reins of a horse-drawn wagon in one hand and a bag of bread in the other. His droopy eyes and half-open mouth give him a knowing, slightly unsettling air. The meme recalls something from the past that most people have forgotten, then has the old man reply that Pepperidge Farm, at least, remembers it. Captions range from nostalgia about old tech to pointed reminders of things someone would rather everyone forgot.
Origin: Pepperidge Farm ran TV commercials in the 1980s with an elderly man fondly recalling old-fashioned baking, ending on the tagline "Pepperidge Farm remembers." Family Guy later spoofed the ad, and that cartoon frame became the image macro.
Also known as: Remember When, Family Guy Pepperidge Farm.
How to use the Pepperidge Farm Remembers meme
Open the top box with "remember when" plus a forgotten detail, an old gadget, a long-gone price or something embarrassing. The bottom box is always the tagline "Pepperidge Farm remembers."
Nostalgia works (dial-up tones, two-dollar movie tickets, memes that died years ago), but the funniest versions are slightly sinister, reminding someone of a promise or a bad call they hoped was buried. The old man's sly look sells that tone.
