What is the Plankton I Went to College meme?
Plankton I Went to College shows Plankton from SpongeBob SquarePants seen through a magnifying glass, his single red eye wide and his mouth stretched into a huge, smug grin. He is tiny, he is ridiculous, and he is absolutely certain of his own genius. The meme captures that energy: someone answering a question about their competence by pointing to their credentials, whether or not those credentials have anything to do with it. Plankton's overconfidence is the joke, so it works best when the degree is being used to justify something obviously silly.
Origin: Plankton is the scheming owner of the Chum Bucket in Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants, which began in 1999. His proud shout of “I went to college!” is a frequently quoted line from the show.
Also known as: I Went to College, Plankton College Meme.
How to use the Plankton I Went to College meme
The top box is the challenge someone throws at you, usually as a question (“how do you know CS?”, “why are you allowed to do this?”). The bottom box is Plankton's answer: “I went to college!”
It is funniest when the question is something a degree does not prove, like fixing a printer, cooking without burning things, or understanding taxes. You can also swap the bottom line for a different credential that sounds equally impressive to the speaker and equally useless to everyone else.
