What is the Second Breakfast meme?
Second Breakfast is a close-up of Merry and Pippin from Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), both bundled in travel cloaks against a wintry hillside. Merry stares ahead flatly while Pippin purses his lips into a hopeful little smile, the face of a hobbit who has just asked about another meal. The scene's humor comes from hobbit appetite: Aragorn wants to keep marching, and Pippin cannot believe anyone would skip a meal. Online it stands in for anyone innocently asking for one more of something they have already had.
Origin: In The Fellowship of the Ring, the hobbits are travelling with Aragorn after leaving Bree. When he tells them to keep going, Pippin asks about second breakfast, and Merry has to explain that Aragorn probably does not know about elevenses, luncheon or the rest either.
Also known as: What About Second Breakfast, Pippin Second Breakfast.
How to use the Second Breakfast meme
Split Pippin's question across the boxes: "what about" on top and the extra helping at the bottom, ending in a question mark. The thing being asked for should be a second round of something that already happened, which is where the innocence comes from: second coffee, second dessert, a second season, another lunch break.
It works best as a reply to someone announcing that the fun part is over. Keep the bottom line short so Pippin's face carries the plea.
