What is the Soldier Protecting Sleeping Child meme?
The Silent Protector is a cartoon of a soldier on his knees with arms spread wide, his uniform on fire and bleeding, while knives, grenades and missiles hit his back. Behind him a child sleeps peacefully in bed, completely unaware of the sacrifice. Meme versions turn it into a labeling joke about shielding something or someone from attack: a fan defending a favourite show from critics, a friend covering for you, or you protecting a guilty pleasure from your own better judgment. The humour comes from applying the heroic, bloody imagery to something trivial.
Origin: The illustration was posted by the Facebook page Laughing Colours in October 2016 and later became an object-labeling template, with text placed on the projectiles, the soldier and the child.
Also known as: The Silent Protector, Soldier Protecting Child, Soldier Shielding Kid.
How to use the Soldier Protecting Sleeping Child meme
There are three boxes. Use them in this order: the first labels the incoming attack (critics, responsibilities, a bad habit), the second labels the soldier taking the hits, and the third labels the sleeping child being protected. The example reads as "me" defending "one more episode" from "my sleep schedule".
It lands when the protected thing clearly does not deserve this much sacrifice, or when the soldier is a surprising hero. Fandom arguments, coworkers covering for each other, a goalkeeper saving a terrible team and a parent hiding the vegetables are all strong setups.
