What is the Sun Tzu, The Art of War meme?
Sun Tzu, The Art of War is a moody black-and-white photo of a terracotta-style statue of an ancient Chinese general, shown from the chest up at the left edge of a pitch-black frame with a calm, stern face. The empty black space on the right is waiting for a quotation. The joke is fake wisdom: write any modern, petty or obviously wrong piece of advice there, sign it "Sun Tzu, The Art of War", and it suddenly sounds like ancient military strategy.
Origin: Sun Tzu is the Chinese general traditionally credited with The Art of War, a treatise on strategy written roughly 2,500 years ago. Attributing invented quotes to him has long been a running internet joke.
Also known as: Sun Tzu Quote, The Art of War Quote, Fake Sun Tzu Quote.
How to use the Sun Tzu, The Art of War meme
The first box is the fake quote, written in a solemn, aphoristic voice. The second box is the attribution, usually "- Sun Tzu, The Art of War".
The funnier the gap between the grand tone and the content, the better: workplace survival tips, gaming strategies, bad dating advice, homework shortcuts. Keep the quote short, give it the rhythm of a proverb, and let the signature do the rest.
