What is the Surprised Pikachu meme?
Surprised Pikachu is a low-resolution frame of Pikachu from the Pokemon anime with its mouth hanging open in a perfect round O and its eyes wide, looking utterly shocked. The joke is that the shock is fake: the caption describes an action with an obvious, predictable outcome, and Pikachu's gaping face is the reaction of someone pretending they never saw it coming. It is the go-to image for mocking people, companies or yourself for being stunned by consequences that were completely foreseeable.
Origin: The frame comes from an early episode of the Pokemon anime's first season, "Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village". It became a widely used reaction image in late 2018.
Also known as: Shocked Pikachu, Pikachu Shocked Face, Pikachu Open Mouth.
How to use the Surprised Pikachu meme
There is one text box, in the white space above Pikachu. Write the setup there in plain sentence case, usually two or three short lines: what someone does, then a line like "me when it goes wrong:" or "the result:". Pikachu's open-mouthed face underneath is the punchline, so nothing goes over the picture.
The key is that the outcome must be painfully predictable. The more inevitable the result, the funnier the shocked face. Common targets are procrastination, ignoring warnings, buying unready products and poking things you were told not to touch. Press Enter in the editor (or use ~n in an API URL) to start a new line.
