What is the Is This a Pigeon? meme?
Is This a Pigeon? is a screenshot from a 1990s anime. A bespectacled young man in a tan coat raises a gloved hand toward a butterfly fluttering nearby, and the subtitle has him ask "Is this a pigeon?" The mismatch is obvious, yet he's sincere. As a meme, people label the man, the butterfly, and the question to mock someone who confidently misidentifies something, usually because they don't understand it or are seeing everything through one lens.
Origin: The frame comes from the 1991 Japanese anime The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird. The android hero Yutaro Katori, still learning about the world, mistakes a butterfly for a pigeon. The screenshot became a reaction image on Tumblr years later.
Also known as: Is This a Pigeon, Butterfly Meme, Anime Butterfly Guy, Is This a Butterfly.
How to use the Is This a Pigeon? meme
There are three boxes. The first sits over the man: who's confused. The second sits by the butterfly: the thing they're looking at. The third, along the bottom, is the wrong question: "Is this X?" where X is a funny misidentification.
It lands when the mislabeling reveals something about the person, like a manager who thinks everything is AI, a parent who thinks every console is a Nintendo, or a beginner who thinks any error is a virus. Keep the labels short and the question confidently wrong.
