What is the Philosoraptor meme?
Philosoraptor is a green ink drawing of a velociraptor in profile, one curved claw raised to its chin in a thinker pose, on a two-tone green pinwheel background. The dinosaur poses brain-twisting questions, paradoxes and wordplay: thoughts that sound profound for a second and then fall apart on closer inspection. The humor comes from pairing a famously savage predator with the quiet pose of a philosopher, plus the shower-thought logic of the captions.
Origin: Artist Sam Smith drew the raptor in 2008 for a shirt sold through the online store Lonely Dinosaur. It became one of the classic advice-animal characters on 4chan and Reddit soon after.
Also known as: Philosoraptor Meme, Thinking Raptor, Philosophy Dinosaur.
How to use the Philosoraptor meme
The top box is the premise, often starting with "if" or a plain statement of fact. The bottom box is the twisted conclusion, almost always phrased as a question.
Good captions exploit loopholes in language or logic: double meanings, literal readings of idioms, or a technically correct observation nobody asked for. A tight setup and a punchline under ten words keep it readable on a phone.
