What is the Red Pill or Blue Pill meme?
Red Pill or Blue Pill shows two open palms held out against a dark background, a red capsule in the left hand and a blue capsule in the right. They belong to Morpheus in The Matrix, offering Neo a choice: the blue pill returns him to a comfortable illusion, while the red pill reveals how reality actually works. As a meme the image becomes a simple two-option dilemma, labeling each pill with a different choice. Usually the joke is that one option is the responsible, harder truth and the other is the cozy lie everyone secretly wants, though plenty of versions just set two equally tempting things against each other.
Origin: The scene is from The Matrix (1999), in which Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus offers Keanu Reeves's Neo the two pills. "Red pill" and "blue pill" later turned into general internet slang for waking up to an uncomfortable truth versus staying comfortably ignorant.
Also known as: Red Pill Blue Pill, Matrix Pills, Morpheus Pill Choice, Take the Red Pill.
How to use the Red Pill or Blue Pill meme
The two boxes sit above the hands: the left one labels the red pill and the right one labels the blue pill. Keep the original logic if you can: red is the painful truth or harder path, blue is the comfortable option.
This is a natural fit for everyday dilemmas: gym or bed, read the docs or guess, check your bank balance or stay blissfully unaware. Short labels of two to five words read best since the boxes are side by side and narrow.
