What is the That's My Secret, Cap meme?
That's My Secret, Cap shows Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner glancing back over his shoulder with a small, knowing smile, standing in a wrecked Manhattan street full of smoke, flames and abandoned yellow taxis while an alien wreck smoulders behind him. It is the moment right before he turns into the Hulk on command. Captain America has just told him that now would be a good time to get angry, and Banner reveals that he never stopped being angry. As a meme, the line becomes a confession of a permanent condition: the person is not about to get tired, hungry, stressed or online, they always are.
Origin: The scene is from Marvel's The Avengers (2012), directed by Joss Whedon, during the Battle of New York. Banner's reply, "That's my secret, Cap. I'm always angry," quickly became one of the film's most quoted lines.
Also known as: I'm Always Angry, Hulk Always Angry.
How to use the That's My Secret, Cap meme
The top box usually keeps the setup, "that's my secret, cap", and the bottom box swaps in the condition: "I'm always ___". You can also lead with the cue that would come before it, such as someone asking you to start worrying, and let the bottom line reveal you never stopped.
It works best for a state that others think is occasional but for you is the default: exhausted, behind on emails, thinking about food, mildly anxious, debugging something. The smile on Banner's face sells it, so pick a condition you are a little proud of.
