What is the Tobey Maguire Crying meme?
Tobey Maguire Crying is a close-up of Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, eyes squeezed, mouth trembling and a tear running down his cheek while a crowd blurs behind him. In the film he is mourning, but the face reads just as well as overwhelmed joy, which is why the meme is used for both. People pair it with something that hits hard emotionally, whether that is real heartbreak, a long-awaited win or a trivially sad moment presented as tragedy.
Origin: The frame is from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002), in the scene where Peter's Uncle Ben dies. People started posting it as a reaction soon after the film came out.
Also known as: Peter Parker Crying, Spider-Man Crying, Crying Peter Parker.
How to use the Tobey Maguire Crying meme
Use the top box for the setup and the bottom box for the moment that breaks him, or put the whole caption in the top box and leave the bottom empty. It works for happy tears (a game finally released, a long debugging session that ends) and mock tragedy (the last slice of pizza is gone).
The face carries so much emotion that understated text is funnier: a calm, factual caption under an over-the-top cry. Twists where the good news has a catch, like tests passing only locally, also suit it.
