What is the Train Hitting a School Bus meme?
Train Hitting a School Bus is a two-panel sequence from crash footage. In the top panel a yellow school bus sits across railroad tracks as a yellow-and-gray locomotive bears down from the left. In the bottom panel the engine has plowed through, and the bus is a smeared blur of yellow metal flying off to the right. The format is pure object labeling: the bus is whatever gets destroyed, the train is whatever destroys it. Because there is no buildup or struggle in the frames, the meme is best for total, instant defeat, plans meeting reality, a diet meeting a birthday cake, or a savings account meeting a game sale.
Origin: The frames come from video of a locomotive striking a school bus that was shared on YouTube in 2007 and later screenshotted into the two-panel format.
Also known as: Train Hitting School Bus, Train vs School Bus, Train Crashing Into Bus.
How to use the Train Hitting a School Bus meme
Box one sits at the top of the upper panel; label the bus there, meaning the thing about to be wrecked. Box two sits at the top of the lower panel; label the train, the unstoppable force that does the wrecking. Reading top to bottom gives you the "before" and the "after".
Short labels work best, two to four words each. Comedy comes from an unfair matchup: something fragile and hopeful against something heavy and inevitable. Sports upsets, budgets, sleep schedules and patch notes are all common targets.
