What is the Uncle Sam I Want You meme?
Uncle Sam I Want You uses the classic American recruitment poster: a stern Uncle Sam in a star-spangled top hat, white goatee and blue coat, pointing straight out of the frame at whoever is looking. On the poster the line was a serious call to enlist. As a meme the pointing finger and the grave stare stay the same, but the demand gets much smaller and more personal, from reviewing a pull request to bringing snacks. The gap between national wartime urgency and a trivial request is the whole joke.
Origin: The poster was drawn by James Montgomery Flagg for US Army recruiting in World War I and was printed again in World War II. Flagg borrowed the pointing pose from a 1914 British poster of Lord Kitchener by Alfred Leete.
Also known as: I Want You Poster, Uncle Sam Pointing, Uncle Sam Wants You.
How to use the Uncle Sam I Want You meme
The top box almost always stays "I want you" so the poster's voice is intact. The bottom box finishes the sentence with what Uncle Sam is actually recruiting you for, starting with "to".
It is a natural fit for group chats, team channels and posters around the office: volunteer sign-ups, chores, code reviews, attending a meeting nobody wants. The more mundane and specific the request, the funnier the stern, patriotic delivery.
