What is the Ugandan Knuckles meme?
Ugandan Knuckles is a crudely modeled, squat red version of Knuckles the Echidna from Sonic, with huge cartoon eyes, a wide white grin, a brown headband with trailing ribbons and a spear in one hand, posed against a blue sky. The character became famous through VRChat, where groups of players using the avatar swarmed other users while repeating "do you know de wey" in an exaggerated accent and making clicking noises. As a caption template it is used for that question and other phrases from the trend.
Origin: The avatar was based on a low-effort Knuckles model created by YouTuber Gregzilla and took over VRChat in early 2018. The phrasing borrowed from earlier Ugandan-themed jokes online, a link that drew criticism as the trend grew.
Also known as: Do You Know the Way, Do U Know De Wey, Knuckles de wey.
How to use the Ugandan Knuckles meme
The top box is often left empty, with the bottom box asking "do u know de wey?" Alternatively, use the top box for a situation where someone is lost and the bottom box for Knuckles' question.
The template mostly works as a nostalgia reference to the 2018 VRChat era. Keep it about the character and the absurd "de wey" quest rather than about the country or accents, which is where the meme drew fair criticism.
