What is the We Have Food at Home meme?
We Have Food at Home is a three-line joke built around a deliberately grim photo: a cooking pan filled with a thin red tomato sauce and alphabet pasta, with a whole yellow banana sitting in the middle of it. The setup is the familiar childhood exchange where a kid asks to stop for takeout and a parent says there's already food at home. The image is the reveal of what that food actually is. It mocks the gap between the thing you wanted and the sad, cheaper substitute you are offered instead.
Origin: "We have food at home" has been a recognizable parent line for decades; captioned photos showing unappetizing "food at home" took off around 2019, and the formula later spread to any "we have X at home" joke.
Also known as: Food at Home, We Have X at Home, Mom Can We Get.
How to use the We Have Food at Home meme
There are three lines. The first is the request ("Me: can we get ___?"), the second is the parent's refusal ("Mom: we have ___ at home"), and the third is the label for the image ("___ at home:").
The joke works when the at-home version is a recognizable knockoff: a cheaper brand, an off-brand game, a dad's DIY fix. The banana in sauce is gloriously wrong, so describe the substitute in the same matter-of-fact way and let the picture deliver the punchline.
