What is the Zoolander Walk-Off Stare meme?
This split-screen pairs Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and Hansel (Owen Wilson) from the 2001 comedy Zoolander, each giving the other a long, smoldering, unreadable look on a red carpet. Derek's brow is furrowed in pure suspicion while Hansel, in a powder-blue fur coat, returns a lazy, knowing stare. Online the pair stands for two people silently judging the same moment, or one person sizing up someone who just said something questionable. The mismatched intensity of two male models trying to out-stare each other gives any awkward caption a ridiculous sense of drama.
Origin: The frames come from the scene where the rival models first face off in public before their walk-off. The image surged on TikTok in late 2022, usually paired with the song "Who Is She?" by I Monster, as part of the lightskin stare trend.
Also known as: Zoolander Stare, Lightskin Stare, Zoolander Sees Hansel, Oh Who Is She, Derek and Hansel Stare.
How to use the Zoolander Walk-Off Stare meme
The top box sets the scene, often starting with "when": a situation, a group chat, a class. The bottom box is the exact line someone says that triggers the stare, ideally in quotation marks so it reads as dialogue.
It works best for moments of mutual silent judgment: two friends hearing the same bad take, two coworkers who both know the meeting could have been an email, or two fans reacting to a hot opinion. The less anyone actually says, the funnier the stare gets.
