What is the All Your Base Are Belong to Us meme?
The All Your Base meme uses a pixel-art portrait from the opening cutscene of the shoot 'em up Zero Wing: CATS, a green-skinned cyborg villain with a metal eyepiece, towering teal hair and a purple cape, smirking against an orange background. In the game he appears to announce that he has seized the heroes' bases, but the English release translated his gloating so clumsily that it became one of the most quoted bits of broken game text ever. As a meme his smug face and the mangled grammar are used to declare victory over something, with the noun swapped for a new target.
Origin: The line comes from the European Sega Mega Drive release of Toaplan's 1989 arcade game Zero Wing. Its intro text circulated on gaming forums in the late 1990s, and a 2001 animated music video made it one of the first big internet memes.
Also known as: All Your Base, AYBABTU, Zero Wing, Somebody Set Up Us the Bomb.
How to use the All Your Base Are Belong to Us meme
There is one text box. Write a takeover announcement in the same broken grammar, either the original line or a variation such as "all your X are belong to us".
It fits takeovers, data grabs, a sibling stealing your snacks, a cat claiming the sofa, a rival team sweeping a series or an app asking for every permission. Keep the grammar mistake intact, because that is what makes the reference instantly recognizable.
