What is the Baby, You've Got a Stew Going meme?
Baby, You've Got a Stew Going shows Carl Weathers in Arrested Development, playing an exaggerated, penny-pinching version of himself. He leans in close to Tobias Fünke, eyes wide and earnest, holding up a gnawed chicken bone as if it is a precious resource. In his worldview nothing is ever thrown away: a bone and some scraps are the start of a whole meal. The meme celebrates thrift and resourcefulness taken to an inspiring, slightly unhinged extreme. It is used whenever someone turns leftovers, scraps or a tiny head start into something worthwhile, or simply refuses to waste anything.
Origin: The scene is from Arrested Development, where Carl Weathers appears as himself, an actor-turned-acting-coach for Tobias who is obsessed with saving money and cheerfully explains how to build a stew from leftovers.
Also known as: Carl Weathers Stew, Arrested Development Stew, You Got a Stew Going.
How to use the Baby, You've Got a Stew Going meme
The top box describes the scraps, the small win or the leftover resources (“have half an onion and a bone”, “got three commits done before lunch”), and the bottom box is his line, “baby, you've got a stew going!”
It works best when the starting point sounds pathetic and the reaction is wildly encouraging. Use it for cooking with leftovers, budgeting, side projects, small progress at the gym, or a team that scrapes together a comeback. You can also leave the top box empty and post it as a reply to someone describing their tiny start.
