What is the Stonks meme?
Stonks shows Meme Man, the smooth bald 3D-rendered head used in surreal memes, wearing a suit in front of a glowing stock chart with an arrow shooting upward. The deliberate misspelling turns "stocks" into a dumb-guy business word: Meme Man thinks he has made a genius financial move when the actual decision is obviously terrible. It is used to celebrate tiny, absurd or self-defeating gains, and later became shorthand for meme-stock trading and gambling-style investing.
Origin: The image came out of the surreal meme scene around 2017, with the Facebook page Special Meme Fresh credited with an early version. It took off again in 2020 and 2021 when retail investors used "stonks" for meme-stock rallies.
Also known as: Stonks Meme Man, Not Stonks, Stonks Guy.
How to use the Stonks meme
The top box describes a terrible idea phrased as a smart financial move. The bottom box is just "stonks", sometimes changed to "not stonks" when things go the other way.
The best setups are confident, short and plainly wrong: buying something to save money, a shortcut that doubles the work, selling a valuable thing for pocket change. Misspelled business vocabulary makes it funnier.
