What is the Scumbag Steve meme?
Scumbag Steve is a photo of a teenager in a hallway wearing a sideways fitted cap and an oversized fur-trimmed coat, giving the camera a self-assured look. The internet decided he was the worst kind of friend, and captions turned him into a freeloader who borrows, mooches, breaks promises and leaves you to deal with the mess. The joke is always a reasonable first half followed by a selfish betrayal.
Origin: The photo shows Blake Boston, who later embraced the fame. It became one of the most recognizable advice animals around 2011, and the hat itself spawned a spin-off meme where it was pasted on others to make them a scumbag.
Also known as: Scumbag Hat, Scumbag Meme.
How to use the Scumbag Steve meme
Write it like a mini story in two parts. The top box is the innocent ask or setup ("needs a place to crash"), and the bottom box is the scumbag twist ("never leaves"). Both boxes read like a profile entry in the third person, without "I".
It fits roommates who eat your food, friends who borrow money, gamers who rage-quit, coworkers who take credit, and anyone who drinks your last soda. The betrayal is funnier when it's petty and specific rather than truly harmful.
