What is the Expectation vs. Reality meme?
This Expectation vs. Reality template has two photos of the same man stacked on the right, with blank white space on the left for captions. In the top photo he leans toward a screen with a huge, delighted grin, clearly expecting something wonderful. In the bottom photo the smile is gone: his mouth hangs half open and his eyes narrow in flat disappointment. The format captures the exact moment hope collapses, which makes it ideal for anything that sounded great right up until you saw the details.
Also known as: Disappointed Black Guy, Happy Then Disappointed, Excited Then Sad.
How to use the Expectation vs. Reality meme
The first box sits in the top-left panel beside the happy face: describe what you were hoping for or the thing that looked promising. The second box sits in the bottom-left panel beside the deflated face: reveal the catch.
Specific, recognisable letdowns work best: a notification that turns out to be spam, a sale that only applies to one item, a long-awaited sequel that is a mobile game. Keep the first line positive and neutral so the twist in the second line hits as hard as his face does. You can also paste small images into the left panels instead of text.
