What is the Get Better Material meme?
Get Better Material is a four-panel comic of a crow doing stand-up. In the first panel it stands on a stool at the mic with an empty speech bubble; in the second a heckler in the crowd yells "Booo! Get better material!"; in the third the crow sweats and says nothing; in the last it flips through its cue cards. The punchline is that the new material on the cards is exactly the same as the old material, because a crow only has one joke: caw. As a meme it mocks anyone who is told to change and responds by doing the identical thing again, only longer or louder.
Origin: The comic comes from False Knees, Joshua Barkman's webcomic about birds and other animals, where it ran in 2016 under the title "Stand-up Cawmedian". The blank bubbles and cue cards made it easy to edit.
Also known as: Stand-up Cawmedian, Crow Comedian, Crow Stand-up Comic, Bird Get Better Material, Boo Get Better Material.
How to use the Get Better Material meme
The first box is the speech bubble in the top-left panel: the bit, product or habit that the crowd is booing. The second box sits on the cue cards in the last panel, and it should reveal the "new" material is the same thing again, ideally longer or with a tiny cosmetic change.
The heckle and the silent sweating panel are already drawn, so you only need the before and after. It works for franchises that keep remaking the same film, bands with one sound, teams that respond to criticism by repeating the plan, and your own predictable habits. The closer the second line is to the first, the better it lands.
