What is the Greedy Pipe Man meme?
Greedy Pipe Man is a cartoon of a heavy man in a suit gulping water straight from the open end of a large pipe, while a thin, starving man sits on the ground beneath it catching the occasional drip from a leak. The drawing was made as a comment on inequality: one party takes nearly everything flowing through the system and the other survives on whatever spills. As a meme it becomes a labeling template, where the big drinker is something that hogs a shared resource and the skinny one is whatever is left fighting over scraps.
Origin: It is a cartoon by the illustrator Baysal, first shared online around 2010 under a title about injustice, and later recaptioned into a meme template.
Also known as: Man Drinking From Pipe, Injustice Cartoon, Water Pipe Meme, Big Guy Drinking From Pipe, Fat Guy Drinking Water.
How to use the Greedy Pipe Man meme
There are two text boxes. The first labels the greedy man at the pipe: the thing that takes most of the resource. The second labels the thin man below who gets the leftovers.
Think of a pipe of time, money, attention, RAM, or energy. Good pairs are a landlord and your salary, Chrome and every other program, your job and your weekend, the main character and the side characters. The joke works best when both labels share the same supply, so you can see exactly what is being hoarded.
