What is the I Guarantee It meme?
I Guarantee It shows George Zimmer, the founder of the menswear chain Men's Wearhouse, in a warm close-up from one of his commercials: grey beard, kind crinkled eyes and an easy smile, looking straight at the camera as if speaking to you personally. For years he ended the store's TV ads with the slogan "You're going to like the way you look. I guarantee it." As a meme, the friendly sales pitch gets attached to anything, from reassuring advice to ridiculous promises he could never back up. The joke is his trustworthy face vouching for something absurd, delivered with the confidence of a man who stakes his name on suits.
Origin: Zimmer founded Men's Wearhouse in 1973 and appeared in its commercials for decades, closing each spot with the guarantee line. Online, the catchphrase also spawned copypasta stories narrated in his voice.
