What is the John Daly and Tiger Woods meme?
John Daly and Tiger Woods is a photo from a golf course in which Tiger Woods, seen from behind in a crisp black vest, black trousers and white cap, stands opposite John Daly. Daly wears a bright blue polo, sunglasses, a white beard and loud pink and blue floral trousers, and is taking a drag on a cigarette with a putter in his other hand. The two men are opposites: the disciplined, athletic professional and the laid-back rule-breaker who still plays at the same tournament. Captions label them as the polished version of something and the chaotic version of the same thing.
Origin: The photo was taken at the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews in July 2022, where both golfers were in the field. It went viral on Twitter that summer and was quickly turned into a labelled comparison.
Also known as: John Daly Smoking Next to Tiger Woods, Golfers Comparison.
How to use the John Daly and Tiger Woods meme
The first box goes over Tiger on the left: the serious, disciplined, ideal version. The second box goes over Daly on the right: the relaxed, messy or real-life version of the same thing ("athletes in the gym" versus "athletes in my fantasy league").
It fits sports, fitness, workplaces and hobbies where some people take it extremely seriously and others just show up. The Daly side should be affectionate, since he is the fun one; the joke is that both of them made it onto the course.
