What is the Willem Dafoe Looking Up meme?
Willem Dafoe Looking Up is a still of Dafoe as Vincent van Gogh, tilting his head back and gazing upward with wide, wet, stunned eyes, as if something enormous is looming over him. It can read as awe or as dread, and that ambiguity is what makes it useful. In memes he is staring up at something huge and overwhelming: a mountain of homework, an absurdly long queue, a tower of dirty dishes, the price of rent. The joke lies in scale, with one fragile man craning his neck at a problem far too big to handle.
Origin: The shot is from At Eternity's Gate, the 2018 biopic about van Gogh directed by Julian Schnabel, in which Dafoe played the painter.
Also known as: Van Gogh Looking Up, Willem Dafoe Staring at Sky, Guy Looking Up Meme.
How to use the Willem Dafoe Looking Up meme
The top box introduces who is looking, often "me looking at" or "me staring up at". The bottom box names the huge thing above him.
Pick something that is literally or figuratively tall: a CI queue, a pile of unread emails, a 700-page textbook, a skill tree, the final boss's health bar, the national debt. You can also play it as wonder for something beautiful and dumb, like a new cereal display. Short, punchy bottom lines read best.
