What is the Two Guys on a Bus meme?
Two Guys on a Bus is a cartoon of a tour bus interior split down the aisle. On the left a slumped, gloomy man in a purple sweater sits against a window that shows nothing but a sheer grey rock wall. On the right a grinning man in a yellow shirt sits by windows full of golden mountains, a winding river and a rising sun. They are on the same bus going the same way, but each sees a completely different view. The meme labels two people or groups in the same situation who experience it in opposite ways, often because of what they choose to look at.
Origin: The cartoon was drawn by Brazilian illustrator Genildo Ronchi around 2013 as an inspirational piece about perspective. It later became a widely used labeling meme.
Also known as: Bus Meme, Sad Guy Happy Guy Bus, Two Sides of the Bus.
How to use the Two Guys on a Bus meme
The left box goes over the sad man next to the rock wall, the right box over the cheerful man looking at the view. Label each one with the person or group whose outlook matches: the pessimist and the optimist, losers and winners, people who checked their bank balance and people who did not.
The twist is that both riders share the exact same bus, so the best captions describe one shared situation from two sides: a deadline, a Monday, a trade, the end of the season.
