What is the Robotnik Pressing Red Button meme?
Robotnik Pressing Red Button is a two-part image. The top half is a cartoon control panel with two buttons, a red one on the left and a blue one on the right, with a gloved hand reaching toward the blue. The bottom half cuts to Jim Carrey as Doctor Robotnik in a red flight suit and goggles, grinning maniacally as he slams a red button. The setup hints at the sensible choice, then the gleeful villain picks the reckless one anyway, which makes it a meme about knowingly choosing chaos.
Origin: The bottom image is from the 2020 live-action film Sonic the Hedgehog, in which Jim Carrey plays Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik. It was combined with a drawn two-button panel and spread as an exploitable.
Also known as: Robotnik Pushing Red Button, Eggman Button, Jim Carrey Robotnik Button.
How to use the Robotnik Pressing Red Button meme
There are three boxes. The first goes on the red button (the tempting, chaotic option), the second on the blue button (the sensible option the hand seems to be reaching for), and the third is the bottom caption over Robotnik, naming who makes the choice.
The joke lands when the red option is obviously worse and the person picks it with delight: staying up late, ignoring a warning, starting a new project instead of finishing one, spending savings on a game. Keep the button labels to a couple of words.
