What is the Daily Struggle meme?
Daily Struggle is the original two-buttons comic. In the top panel a gloved finger hovers between two big red buttons, each on its own white plate on a control panel. In the bottom panel the man in a red shirt dabs his sweaty forehead with a handkerchief, eyes wide and mouth tight with panic. The buttons stand for two options that contradict each other, and the sweating shows he cannot pick. It is the standard image for an impossible, self-inflicted dilemma, from dumb everyday choices to arguments where both sides are tempting for the person stuck in the middle.
Origin: Animator Jake Clark drew the comic and posted it to his Tumblr in October 2014, with the buttons labelled with two opposite choices about being polite. Blank versions spread quickly and the buttons were relabelled for every kind of dilemma.
Also known as: Two Buttons, Two Buttons Meme, Sweating Button Guy.
How to use the Daily Struggle meme
The first box labels the left button and the second box labels the right button: write two choices that cannot both happen. The third box goes on the sweating man and names who is stuck choosing ("me", "the referee", "every developer").
The funniest pairs are both appealing or both bad in a way the audience recognizes. Keep the button labels short, a few words each, so they fit on the small plates. If your character simply picks both, use the Both Buttons Pressed version instead.
