What is the Sleeping Shaq meme?
Sleeping Shaq pairs two pictures of Shaquille O'Neal on the right with blank white space on the left. In the top picture he is peacefully asleep on a pillow, labeled "i sleep." In the bottom picture the same face has been deep-fried with saturated colour and glowing lens-flare eyes, labeled "real sh*t?" as he snaps awake. The joke is selective attention: something reasonable fails to interest him at all, then something oddly specific or petty instantly jolts him wide awake.
Origin: The sleeping photo of O'Neal appeared in a 2009 AdWeek post about athletes using Facebook.
Also known as: I Sleep Real Shit, I Sleep Meme, Shaq Wakes Up.
How to use the Sleeping Shaq meme
The left half has two boxes. The top box describes the thing that bores you or should matter but does not; the bottom box describes the trivial, niche or personal thing that makes you sit up. Phrase both as situations, like "someone says ___."
The sharper the contrast, the better. Lean into priorities that are slightly ridiculous: ignoring a fire alarm but waking for a snack wrapper, sleeping through a lecture until the professor mentions a movie you love.
