What is the Squidward Chair meme?
Squidward Chair is a two-panel image from SpongeBob SquarePants. In the top panel Squidward eagerly drags a blue lounge chair onto the sand in front of his house, ready to relax. In the bottom panel he trudges back toward his front door with the folded chair under his arm, eyes half closed and shoulders slumped. The pair works as a before-and-after of disappointment: plans made with optimism and then given up on. It is often used like the Drake approval format, with the top panel as the thing you were excited for and the bottom one as giving up.
Origin: Both frames come from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "The Paper" from 2000. The two-panel combination took off as a template in 2019.
Also known as: Squidward's Lounge Chair, Squidward Beach Chair.
How to use the Squidward Chair meme
The top box describes what you were looking forward to or setting up; the bottom box is the moment the plan collapses or the reason you quit. Read top to bottom, it should be a tiny story of enthusiasm turning into defeat.
It suits weekend plans ruined by weather, side projects abandoned after a day, gym motivation that fades, or waiting for something that never comes. Squidward's dead-eyed walk back inside sells the giving up, so the bottom caption can be dry and short.
