What is the This is Sparta! meme?

This is Sparta! takes its name from the moment in 300 when King Leonidas, played by Gerard Butler, roars the line and kicks a Persian messenger into a pit. The template still shows Leonidas on a battlefield strewn with bodies, sword raised, beard bloodied and mouth wide open in a war cry, which makes any sentence placed on top sound like a battle cry. As a meme it turns small, petty or nerdy declarations into epic statements: the absurdity comes from shouting "THIS. IS. X!" about something that deserves a shrug. The broken-up rhythm, with a full stop after every word, is as recognizable as the image itself.

Origin: The scene comes from Zack Snyder's 300 (2006), adapted from Frank Miller's graphic novel about the Battle of Thermopylae. The line became one of the first movie quotes to be endlessly remixed online, in image macros and video mashups alike.

Also known as: This is Sparta, 300 Sparta Kick, Leonidas Sparta, Madness? This is Sparta.

How to use the This is Sparta! meme

Split the line across the two boxes. The top box usually holds "this. is." and the bottom box holds the word you are shouting, ending in an exclamation mark, so the punchline lands right at his open mouth.

Pick a place, rule or ritual that someone is being far too intense about: a library's quiet zone, a strict code review, a family's game night, a gym on the first Monday of January. The bigger the gap between the epic image and the small subject, the better. You can also use the top box for a setup and the bottom for "THIS. IS. ___!" in full.
