What is the Tom Reading the Newspaper meme?
Tom Reading the Newspaper shows Tom from Tom and Jerry lounging in a green striped armchair, holding a newspaper open on his lap and looking up from it with a sharp, suspicious frown. His expression says he has just read something that makes no sense, or something he does not believe for a second. The meme puts a headline on his newspaper and lets Tom's side-eye do the judging. It is especially good for absurd news, confusing announcements, or anything that makes you stop and reread.
Origin: The frame is from the 1956 Tom and Jerry short "Down Beat Bear." It became an exploitable once people started writing their own headlines across Tom's newspaper.
Also known as: Tom Reading Newspaper, Suspicious Tom Newspaper, Tom Newspaper.
How to use the Tom Reading the Newspaper meme
The top box sits above Tom and works as a setup or label ("me", "news:", "when"). The bottom box sits on the newspaper itself, so it should read like a headline or a news item that Tom has just read.
The joke depends on the headline being strange, ironic or quietly alarming. Real-sounding news phrasing ("Local man...", "Study finds...") works well. You can also flip it: write the headline as if reporting on the reader, making Tom's look more pointed.
