What is the Never Ask a Woman Her Age meme?
Never Ask a Woman Her Age is a three-row chart with cartoon clip-art figures. The first row shows a woman and says "Never ask a woman her age", the second shows a man and reads "A man, his salary", and the third row is left blank for you to complete. The setup implies that all three questions are so touchy that people will lie or dodge them, so the joke is filling the last row with a group and the one question they least want to answer honestly.
Origin: The format was a sincere motivational-style graphic shared on Facebook in the early 2010s, ending with a line about students. It returned as an ironic template on Reddit in 2019.
Also known as: All Three Are Going To Lie To You, A Man His Salary, Never Ask Meme.
How to use the Never Ask a Woman Her Age meme
There is one box, in the empty bottom row. Write the third person and the question they hate, without repeating "never ask": "a developer, their test coverage". The person and the question should belong together so readers instantly know why the answer would be a lie.
It works for professions, hobbies and fandoms: gamers and hours played, students and how much they studied, runners and their pace. Keep it to two short lines to match the rows above.
