What is the What a Country meme?

What a Country shows Dr. Nick Riviera from The Simpsons standing outside his clinic in a scorched lab coat and torn trousers, arms spread wide, while firefighters hose down the building behind him. At his feet lies a blown-apart canister of ether marked inflammable. He has just learned the hard way that "inflammable" means the same as "flammable", and instead of being upset he reacts with pure wonder: "Inflammable means flammable? What a country!" The meme borrows that delighted confusion for any absurd rule, contradiction or surprising fact.

Origin: The line comes from The Simpsons episode "Trilogy of Error" (2001), in which Dr. Nick's clinic catches fire after a mix-up over the word inflammable.

Also known as: Dr. Nick What a Country, Inflammable Means Flammable.

How to use the What a Country meme

The top box is the baffling discovery, phrased as a question in Dr. Nick's style: "X means Y?" or "you can just do X?" The bottom box is almost always "what a country!", sometimes swapped for a city, company or game to fit the joke.

It lands on real contradictions: English spelling rules, tax forms, airline fees, software settings with confusing names, or sports rules that make no sense. The sillier the fact and the more sincere the amazement, the better.
