What is the What the Hell is This? meme?
What the Hell is This? is a Family Guy frame on Noah's Ark: an indignant white-bearded Noah in a brown robe gestures at a bizarre creature on the left, a penguin with an elephant's head and trunk. On the right stand the two animals it seems to be made from, a full-size elephant and an ordinary penguin. The labeled version turns the hybrid into any awkward combination of two things that should have stayed separate, with Noah demanding to know what it is supposed to be.
Origin: The image comes from a Family Guy cutaway about Noah loading the ark. A version labeling the animals "street", "road" and "stroad" helped make it a popular template for criticizing awkward hybrids.
Also known as: Family Guy Noah's Ark, Noah Stroad, Stroad Meme, Elephant Penguin Family Guy.
How to use the What the Hell is This? meme
There are four boxes. The first labels the elephant on the right and the second labels the regular penguin beside it: the two normal things. The third labels the elephant-headed penguin on the left: the strange mix of the two. The fourth, along the bottom, is Noah's reaction, usually "what the hell is this?".
It is perfect for hybrids nobody asked for: a phone that is also a tablet, a meeting that is also a lunch, a sport that mixes two others, a food mashup. The middle label should be a recognizable blend of the first two.
