What is the Winter is coming meme?
Winter is Coming shows Sean Bean as Ned Stark from Game of Thrones, wrapped in a heavy fur cloak, gripping the pommel of his sword and glancing sideways with a grim, weary expression against a plain white sky. He looks like a man who has seen this coming for years and is tired of warning everyone. The meme turns his family's ominous motto into a forecast for any predictable wave of something annoying: exam season, spoiler floods, holiday ads, fans flooding the internet after a big release. The "Brace yourselves" phrasing makes small seasonal irritations sound like an approaching army.
Origin: "Winter is coming" is the House Stark motto in the A Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R. R. Martin, and Ned says it early in HBO's Game of Thrones, which premiered in 2011. The "brace yourselves" macro spread the same year.
Also known as: Brace Yourselves, Winter is Coming, Imminent Ned, Brace Yourselves.
How to use the Winter is coming meme
The top box is the warning ("brace yourselves", "prepare yourself") and the bottom box names what is coming. You can also keep the original wording and swap only the noun: "brace yourselves" / "the Monday standup is coming".
It is strongest for things that arrive like clockwork: Christmas music in November, influencer posts after an Apple event, "is it a bug or a feature" threads after a patch, wedding season. Ned's grim face does the work, so keep the tone dry and the threat slightly absurd.
