What is the Captain Hindsight meme?
Captain Hindsight is the South Park superhero in a yellow and red costume with an eye emblem on his chest, standing in front of a disaster site with one gloved finger raised as if about to make a very important point. His only power is showing up after a catastrophe and explaining exactly what everyone should have done differently, which helps no one. The meme turns that into captions that explain, far too late, how a problem could have been avoided, mocking smug after-the-fact advice.
Origin: Captain Hindsight appeared in South Park's season 14 episode "Coon 2: Hindsight" (2010), where the media celebrates him for lecturing rescuers after the fact during a disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.
Also known as: South Park Captain Hindsight, Hindsight Is 20/20.
How to use the Captain Hindsight meme
The top box names the bad outcome or the moment it happened, often starting with "if you wanted to" or "you probably shouldn't have". The bottom box is the obvious, useless advice that arrives too late. Example: "if you wanted to avoid the friend zone" / "you should have made your intentions known from the start".
It works for any situation where someone explains the fix only once it no longer matters: backing up files, saving the game, reading the instructions, checking the weather. You can also use it to roast people in the comments who give advice after the damage is done.
