What is the Doge meme?
Doge is the close-up of a fluffy Shiba Inu glancing sideways at the camera with raised eyebrows and a slightly worried, slightly smug half-smile. The dog is Kabosu, a rescue Shiba whose owner posted photos of her online, and this side-eye shot became the face of an entire internet dialect. Doge captions are scattered fragments of broken English, usually in Comic Sans and bright colors, written as the dog's inner monologue: "such wow", "very scare", "much confuse". The joke is the earnest, wide-eyed narration of something ordinary, as if a dog were discovering the world one baffled two-word thought at a time.
Origin: The photos came from a blog kept by Kabosu's owner, a kindergarten teacher in Japan, around 2010. The Doge style exploded on Tumblr and Reddit in 2013, and the same year it inspired Dogecoin, a joke cryptocurrency that later became very real. Kabosu died in May 2024.
Also known as: Shiba Inu Doge, Kabosu, Such Wow, Doge Meme, Shibe.
How to use the Doge meme
Each box gets a short Doge phrase rather than a sentence. The grammar is the whole joke: pair "such", "very", "much" or "so" with a word that does not fit ("very deadline", "much spreadsheet"), and end on a lone "wow" when you have room. Lowercase reads more authentically, even though the template renders in caps.
Pick a mundane situation and narrate it with total wonder: a Monday standup, a cheese aisle, a new phone update. Two or three wrong-word pairings beat one long line, and the sillier the noun after "such", the better it lands.
