What is the Grandma Finds the Internet meme?
Grandma Finds the Internet is a stock photo of an elderly woman with curly white hair, sitting in a cozy yellow room in front of a laptop. She is holding her glasses up to her eyes with one hand, leaning toward the screen with her mouth slightly open, as if she has just read something she cannot quite believe. The captions narrate what she discovers online, usually a perfectly normal piece of internet culture described with innocent confusion, or something shocking that she takes completely at face value. Her sweet, puzzled expression is what makes even mild captions funny.
Origin: The image is a stock photograph of an older woman looking at a computer screen, taken in 2005, which became an advice animal macro in the early 2010s.
Also known as: Internet Grandma Surprise, Grandma Meme, Grandma on Laptop.
How to use the Grandma Finds the Internet meme
Use the top box to set up what grandma has found (“grandma finds”, or a question she asks), and the bottom box to name the discovery or her bewildered take on it. The classic pattern is “grandma finds the internet” with any web phenomenon in the bottom box.
The best captions describe internet things as if seen for the first time: memes, streamers, crypto, cat videos, Wikipedia rabbit holes. Keep it affectionate; the joke is her innocent surprise, not mocking older people.
