What is the Hard to Swallow Pills meme?
Hard to Swallow Pills is a two-panel cartoon in the clean, soft-shaded style of a WikiHow illustration. In the top panel two hands hold a white medicine bottle whose label reads "hard to swallow pills", one finger pointing at the words. In the bottom panel a few round white tablets sit in an open palm while a finger taps one of them. Captions are written over those pills, so each tablet becomes an uncomfortable truth that the reader would rather not accept but probably needs to hear.
Origin: The two drawings come from a WikiHow how-to article; the bottle label was edited to say "hard to swallow pills" and the format spread as a photoshop template where the pills carry the caption.
Also known as: Hard Pills to Swallow, Pills Meme, WikiHow Pills.
How to use the Hard to Swallow Pills meme
There is one box, placed over the pills in the bottom panel. Write a blunt truth that a specific group does not want to hear, phrased as a plain statement rather than a joke.
The best pills are mildly painful and widely recognised: gamers being told the game is fine and they are just bad at it, students hearing that the all-nighter did not help, developers realising the bug is in their own code. Short, flat sentences hit hardest, as if read straight off a prescription.
