What is the I Can Has Cheezburger? meme?
I Can Has Cheezburger? features Happy Cat, a round gray British Shorthair sitting upright with bright orange eyes and its mouth open in what looks like a delighted smile. Captioned in deliberately broken "lolspeak", it asks for a cheeseburger with the eager, ungrammatical voice of a cat who wants food. It's one of the most famous early lolcats and gave its name to an entire humor site. The meme is all about cute, polite demands in baby talk, and it suits any request where you want to sound adorable rather than entitled.
Origin: The Happy Cat photo circulated on forums like Something Awful in the early 2000s, and the "I can has cheezburger?" caption made it the face of the lolcat craze. The I Can Has Cheezburger website launched in 2007 around it.
Also known as: I Can Has Cheezburger, Happy Cat, Lolcat, Cheezburger Cat.
How to use the I Can Has Cheezburger? meme
Put the start of the request in the top box, usually "I can has", and the thing being asked for in the bottom box, ending in a question mark. Keep the grammar delightfully wrong: "can has", "pls", "iz", "nao".
The meme works for snacks, days off, extensions and impossible wishes. It's especially fun when the request is very adult or corporate but phrased like a hungry cat, because that sweet tone undercuts the seriousness.
