What is the James Franco Staring at Tobey Maguire meme?
This template stacks two shots from Spider-Man 3. On top, Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker smiles happily in a dark theater audience, completely unaware. Below, James Franco's Harry Osborn sits a few rows away and stares at him with half-closed eyes and a smug, knowing look. The meme labels the oblivious person on top and the silent watcher underneath, turning the image into a picture of someone being judged, plotted against or quietly found out without realising it.
Origin: Both shots come from the 2007 Sony film Spider-Man 3, during the scene where Peter and Harry watch Mary Jane perform on stage while their friendship has turned hostile.
Also known as: Harry Osborn Staring, Spider-Man 3 Theater Stare.
How to use the James Franco Staring at Tobey Maguire meme
The top box describes the person or thing in the top panel, usually "me" doing something they think is going unnoticed. The bottom box labels Harry: whoever is watching and knows the truth.
The joke works when the top line sounds innocent and the bottom line reveals why it isn't: pretending to work while the boss watches, claiming to have read the book in front of the author, a cheat code next to the anti-cheat. Keep the bottom label short; Franco's face already says everything.
