What is the Joseph Ducreux meme?
Joseph Ducreux is the 18th-century French painter's self-portrait in which he grins smugly out of the frame, leaning back and pointing a finger straight at the viewer, wearing a fur-trimmed coat and a scarf. The knowing smirk inspired a meme known as Archaic Rap: famous rap or pop lyrics rewritten in pompous, old-fashioned English, as if a powdered-wig gentleman were translating them for polite society. Half the fun is decoding which song a caption refers to, and the other half is the formal vocabulary colliding with street slang.
Origin: Ducreux painted the self-portrait around 1793, presenting himself as a mocker. Internet users later began captioning it with reworded lyrics, which gave the format its Archaic Rap name.
Also known as: Archaic Rap, Joseph Ducreux Meme, Old Painting Pointing Guy.
How to use the Joseph Ducreux meme
Split one well-known lyric across both boxes and rewrite every word in stiff, Victorian-sounding English. Swap "get" for "acquire", "money" for "currency", "you" for "thou", and add a "prithee" or "good sir" when it fits.
The lyric must stay recognizable, so pick songs with famous hooks and keep the rhythm close to the original. Rewritten song titles, movie quotes and gamer slang work too, as long as the reader gets the reference within a second.
