What is the Parasite Driving meme?
Parasite Driving is a still from Bong Joon-ho's Parasite: Song Kang-ho as Kim Ki-taek sits behind the wheel of a luxury car, staring ahead with a flat, tired, barely hidden look of contempt, while his wealthy employer Mrs. Park chats happily on her phone in the back seat. She has no idea what he thinks of her; he has no choice but to keep driving. The image captures class resentment in a single glance, which is why it is used for any moment where one side is cheerfully oblivious and the other has to sit there and take it with a straight face.
Origin: Bong Joon-ho's film debuted at Cannes in May 2019, took home the Palme d'Or, and later became the first non-English-language film to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Ki-taek works as the Park family's chauffeur, and the car scenes build up his quiet humiliation.
Also known as: Ki Taek From Parasite Driving, Kim Ki-taek Driving, Parasite Chauffeur.
How to use the Parasite Driving meme
There are two boxes. The left one sits over Mrs. Park in the back seat: put the oblivious person or what they are saying there. The right one sits above Ki-taek: label him as whoever has to listen in silence.
It lands best with a smug, out-of-touch remark on the left and a long-suffering group on the right: billionaires on hustle culture, a manager praising unpaid overtime, a landlord talking about rent, a friend explaining crypto. Keep the right label short, since his face does the talking.
