What is the Somehow Palpatine Returned meme?
Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron sits among the Resistance at night, eyes half shut, delivering the line "Somehow, Palpatine returned" with the weary calm of someone announcing a minor scheduling change. In the film the sentence is the entire explanation for why a villain who died decades earlier is back, and audiences found that hilarious. As a meme it mocks any comeback, plot twist or returning problem that arrives with zero justification: a fixed bug that reappears, an ex who texts again, a cancelled show revived out of nowhere. The shrug of "somehow" is the whole punchline.
Origin: The line comes from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). Viewers widely ridiculed how little the film explained Emperor Palpatine's return, and the quote became shorthand for lazy storytelling and unexplained comebacks.
Also known as: Poe Dameron Somehow, Somehow Meme.
How to use the Somehow Palpatine Returned meme
The top box is usually just "somehow", mirroring the hesitant start of Poe's line. The bottom box names the thing that came back, phrased like "[thing] returned". Keep the structure intact; recognising the cadence of the original quote is half the fun.
It works best for things that were supposed to be gone for good: a resolved ticket that reopens, a retired player unretiring, a recalled food item back on the menu, last season's villain in a sequel. The flatter and more matter-of-fact the wording, the better it matches Poe's deadpan delivery.
