What is the The Scroll of Truth meme?
The Scroll of Truth is a four-panel hand-drawn comic. A small green explorer in a big brown hat wades into a crystal cave, opens a chest after a 15-year search and joyfully holds up the glowing Scroll of Truth. The third panel shows what the scroll says, and in the last panel he flings it away, scowling, with a disgusted "NYEHHH". The joke is that the truth he quested for is one he does not want to hear. Fill the scroll with a fact your audience knows but would rather ignore, and the explorer's tantrum becomes everyone's reaction to it.
Origin: The comic was drawn by artist Tate Parker, who signs his work Robotatertot Comics, and posted to Tumblr in early 2017. People quickly blanked out the scroll so it could carry any unwelcome truth.
Also known as: Scroll of Truth, NYEHHH Meme, Truth Scroll, Unwanted Truth Meme.
How to use the The Scroll of Truth meme
There is a single text box: the blank scroll in the bottom-left panel. Write one short, blunt statement that is true but unwelcome to a specific group: gamers, developers, students, sports fans, people who "will start Monday". The comic supplies the rest, from the triumphant reveal to the furious toss.
It lands when the reader thinks "ouch, that's me". Avoid jokes that need a setup, since the scroll should read in one glance. A second version of the gag puts something obviously false on the scroll so the explorer happily keeps it, but the classic rejection is what most people expect.
