What is the Trojan Horse meme?
Trojan Horse is an editorial-style illustration of a huge wooden horse on wheels, rolled up to an open castle gate on a red carpet. A smiling man in a T-shirt pulls the horse by a rope while a suited man welcomes it in, and a cutaway in the horse's belly shows three grinning soldiers with spears and shields waiting inside. The joke is the classic myth applied to modern life: something presented as a gift or a harmless offer that is secretly carrying a less welcome payload. Free trials, “free” apps and friendly favors are all frequent subjects.
Origin: The drawing is by illustrator Martin Kozlowski and was published in 2015, originally as a comment on Facebook being welcomed into the news industry. The image itself is based on the wooden horse of the Trojan War from Greek legend.
Also known as: Trojan Horse Object Labels, Trojan Horse Meme, Wooden Horse Meme.
How to use the Trojan Horse meme
This version uses top and bottom captions instead of labels on the objects. Put the attractive offer in the top box (“free trial”) and the hidden catch in the bottom box (“recurring subscription”), as if the bottom line is what is inside the horse.
It lands best when the offer feels genuinely tempting and the catch is something everyone has fallen for: subscriptions, cookies banners, “quick favors”, group projects, battle passes, cheap flights with add-on fees. Keep both lines to a few words.
